Scott Lasater - May Volunteer Spotlight

It’s May, and we have put thoughts of snow and ice storms behind us for at least 6 months. But it’s good to know that when those menacing snowstorms hit, there is one man (who is quick to point to his team of assistants) who makes sure you have a place to park and a path to get inside Union Chapel even during the coldest, whitest weekends. That man is Scott Lasater, who has been attending Union Chapel since the first Sunday of 1997.

In 1999, Scott was recruited by Mark Waldo to help clear the parking lots after a heavy snowfall. Since then, with a team including Steve Minard, Steve Zirkle, Dan Flanagan and others, Scott arrives at Union Chapel as early as 4:00am to clear our lots, a job that can last anywhere from an hour and a half to half a day or more, depending on the amount of ice and snowfall he has to scrape and clear.

It’s a behind-the-scenes job that makes a huge difference—representative of many volunteer positions at Union Chapel.  We may not stop to think about who cleared the lot as we shuffle into our buildings, but if Scott and his team did not show up in the dark early morning hours and serve as they do, everyone would notice!

Scott says, “Like any volunteer position, you begin serving to bless other people, but what happens is you end up getting way more out of it than you expected. The time and even money spent on blades or repairs is more than made up for by the continual blessings you receive as you give.”

Scott, while we’re gearing up for picnics and fireworks this summer, we want you to how much we appreciate all you do each winter to keep our parking lots safe and doors open. You and your team are a great example of those who serve--sacrificing time, sleep, equipment and comfort for the body of Christ at Union Chapel—thank you!
